These are BEAMS PLUS Gurkha shorts, based on Gurkha pants, which have their roots in the pants worn by the Nepalese mountain people, the "Gurkha soldiers," who served in the British army in the 19th century.

The fabric is a slightly stiff cotton twill. It has started to show wear, giving it a military-fancy, lived-in feel typical of Gurkha pants.
